Save a coonhound

This is the photo of Booker, from the American Black and Tan Coonhound Rescue Web site, that inspired our unanimous "That's our dog."

He has tested, strained and challenged every once of dog savvy that we thought - and think - we have. He is both a rescue and a reward.

He is the coolest dog I have ever lived with. He is smart, he is dignified, he is earnest, he is independent. He tries really hard. He gives 110%. And he looks great on the leather sofa.

Coonhounds are infinitely "American" dogs. Unfortunately, the traits that were bred into them are often their undoing, as well.

Read this sad, thought-provoking article in the Tuskegee News.

We want to add a comment: Coonhounds make incredible house dogs.

They have even been known to adapt to condo living.

I will go over and read that news story. I love that photo and you are right, such a truly marvelous reward....That was a sad story about the 7 year old boy that you told me about, but also a moving story, especially about the butterfly tattoo..what a brave lil soul he was. Thank you for sharing

We read the article and even saw your comment. Looking at the picture of that poor suffering coonhound and thinking about all the others who are left to wander the streets just makes us ill.

Our Mom would go to pieces if she saw a dog like that and couldn't do something. Looking at Booker's photo -- she's applauding you for recognizing him as your dog and making it so!!!

Lots of wirey love,

Jake and Just Harry

Hi Booker. That is a very sad article. It makes mom really mad to read things like that. She knows that there will be a time and place for them to pay for the terrible things they do to those who cannot defend themselves, but she would still like to kick them in the patoutie!

That story was just too sad for the Mango. How can people do that to their doggies? Booker, you are one lucky dude.

Mistress has been banned from reading that story as it sounds like the sort of thing that will make her cry.

You look very handsome in that photo.

Wow--no wonder you were smitten. What a face! And those mournful hound dog eyes! I'm so glad you found each other.

I'm thrilled to have found your blog. I have to affirm that coonhounds make great dogs. I have two: one beautiful, sweet Treeing Walker and a Black and Tan mix who is the smartest dog I've ever owned. For several years, we had a beagle, as well. Hounds are fabulous and full of personality.

What a sad, sad story. Thanks for making us all more aware of coonhounds and some of the issues they face.
