When Maple Sugar first appeared on the ABTCR site, I was enchanted. Look at her face. Look at those eyes. What a gentle soul this dog seemed to have. She needed saving, critically.
"How about a bloodhound?" I asked David, only half kidding.
I keep flirting with the thought of a second dog, and I know that it would be a hound. The thought of two dogs in a condo is daunting. Impractical. Insanity. Still, Maple Sugar had a hold on my imagination. Then she disappeared from the Rescue site. "Wonderful," I thought, "she has been adopted! She wasn't meant for us ..."
I read this the other day. It is heartwrenching. David teared up when I relayed it.
"Maple Sugar is at peace. She was a red Bloodhound who spent almost all her life tied up and forgotten. Finally at 2 years of age, her owner abandoned her to fend for herself. Maple had a long road ahead in her recovery from chronic emaciation and heartworm disease, but she maintained a very loving and gentle personality and was so grateful for any small kindness. Maple experienced the joys of a soft bed, regular meals and love for the first time in her life during her short time in foster care. She gave up her struggle today, while being held by her foster mom."
Some of these gorgeous dogs can be saved. For some it is just too late. Who could be so cruel as to let this happen to a living creature? Furious, sad, astounded ... there is no list of words expressive enough ...

Hi
Saw you on River's blog and thought we would drop by to say hello.
This story is so sad. I really can't understand how any human being could be so cruel. Even in the face of such adversity this brave dog still managed to be loving and gentle to humans. It made me cry when I read this story.

Why does this happen? ;-(

This is so sad. It's hard to imagine that people like that really exist...so hard to understand how anyone could be that cruel. This will catch up with them eventually. Poor, poor baby :-(
Sad story with a bittersweet ending. So unfair, so cruel. My mom thinks if people were kind to animals there would never be war or cruelty to humans.
We don't understand it.
But my mom sees some hope. So many more people volunteer, foster, drive rescued animals, and respond to global emergenices than she's ever seen. Quite possibly it's the Internet and possibly that touch of idealism she saw in the 60s (she admits she's an old hippie) is reappearing. She feels she might lay down her sword for a little while and let others attend on the crusade while she rests. Meanwhile we have her for ourselves and she does what she can from her 'puter.
Maple Sugar, rest in peace, sweet girl. Things are better now.
love & wags,
River
Inhumane! Well, at least she is not suffering anymore.
PS. Love the new picture of you.
Well, that's a sad story, but I guess she would be better off at the bridge than suffering here.
OMG, what a beautiful girl she is! How very, very sad! How can some hoomans be so cruel!
Love ya lots,
Maggie and Mitch
That is so sad! It's so hard to see how anyone could be so mean so a poor four legged human!
I think we should all just be so thankful that we have humans that love us and care for us so well!

This picture makes me so sad. However, as I am dictating to my human, I am gnawing on one awesome rope of a toy. My human let me take the cone off since I was laying right next to her!
I hope you had the best weekend ever my friend!

That is such a sad story! We are afraid the same thing would have happened to Patches if Airedale Rescue hadn't found her in time. Fortunately, she was heartworm negative, but you could see every bone in her tiny little 'dale body. Since she came to live with us, she has put on lots of weight and you can't see any of her bones now. We pray, all the time, for any doggies that might be in the same situation.
Aire-hugs,
Poppy, Penny & Patches
Hello
We came over from Kess's blog.
This makes us very sad.
Our dog, Fei , is a rescue too.
Actually she was a stray and was probably kicked around a lot.
We pray and hope that all dogs are as well-loved as we are here on DWB. And for those who didnt quite make it; we hope the rainbow bridge will be a much better place where they can meet all our doggies who have passed on and are waiting for us.
Love
Fei and her human,
e
